Episode 138: “The Dumbest Thing at CES”

This week, we bring you the latest virtual reality and gaming news from the Consumer Electronics Show, and talk about first contact in Elite: Dangerous, the closure of Landmark, and a DUST fan’s project to build DUST maps in Halo 5: Forge.

Some of the most exciting news was about the HTC Vive and it’s new accessories. Razer’s Project Ariana projector is seen here, and the dumbest thing at CES, Razer’s Project Valerie, is seen here. (Post-show update: Two Valerie laptops were stolen!) Microsoft also announced a bunch of VR headsets.

Check out Talos Vagheitan’s DUST map work on Halo 5: Forge.

Here’s the first contact footage from Elite: Dangerous.

Landmark is closing down on February 21st, 2017. And Mass Effect: Andromeda is coming (new trailer) a month later, on March 21st.

It’s available now on iTunes or you can find it at http://biomassed.net/podcast

  1. I am waiting for a triple screen phone. I need the screen on my phone to be BIGGER! But I need the phone to also be smaller, so it will actually fit in my pocket. So, triple slide-out screen seems to be the most likely approach. The flexible screen roll out scroll approach just seems unwealidy.

As for the Valerie laptop, even with 3 screens, there is still not enough screen space for me. I am still waiting for 4K wall paper screens to tern your whole wall into a high definition screen.

Actually the 3 screen laptop might be good for search and rescue as a mobile command center, once the technology is available to support it.

    • Razer’s other project, Ariana, gives you the full wall effect! Your eyes will only perceive the high quality video on your screen anyways, you don’t need the whole wall to be perfect quality screen.

Microsoft has been playing with some new prototypes of phones that can unfold into tablets lately, I believe.

There probably is actually more business sense in a three screen laptop than for gaming, as it’s easy to drive three screens if you aren’t using them for gaming.

      • In truth I was thinking more of work than gaming when commenting on the full wall display. I normally have over 20 applications open at any one time and am often cross referencing between 3 or 4 different windows. I want my mapping windows to be big, and it is nice to be able to view 15 to 20 columns of data in an excel file without scrolling left and right.

Rather than minimizing programs to a ribbon at the bottom of the screen I would rather just move the windows away from the middle of my work space as you would do with papers on an old fashion desk’s top.

Although, for gaming, I definitely found more screen space was better when running multiple accounts in EVE, particularly during combat.
